Lingerie fabric generally falls into 3 broad categories:

In this group we find cotton, silk and wool. These were the first fibers used for apparel and are appreciated for their comfort and softness. Except for cotton, which can be washed easily, they are delicate and require gentle care.

These originate from chemical treatment of wood cellulose and are known under the names of acetate, rayon and viscose. They provide comfort and have glowing characteristics but like wood, they do not react well to water.

These are petroleum-based products introduced in the 1940's and are widely used nowadays. They include nylon, acrylic, polyester, and spandex… Synthetics are known for their high strength, their ability to stretch and their resistance to wrinkling.
